Surrounded by the sea on three sides, Marmaris extends as far as the Datça peninsula in the west, Balaban Mountain in the northeast, and Bozburun via the villages of Orhaniye and Selimiye in the southwest. The local tourist industry has flourished thanks to many bays, islands of different sizes and forests, which overlook its beaches. We strongly recommend you not to just setle fort he swimming pool in your hotel in Marmaris.
Do not limit yourself to Standard tour packages off at is but travel independently, even if only for one day. The first place we advice you to stop off at is ORHANİYE, 20 kilometers from Marmaris and is connected to Datça by road. It is only a short distance, after turning left when you see the Hisarönü-Orhaniye road sing. If you do not rent a car, you can take a minibus at the stop in front of the Tansaş supermarket in Marmaris any time between 10.30 AM. And 7 PM .
Orhaniye is a natural port. The sea is always as flat as a millpond. The colors of the sea and the forest mingle together. Do not be surprised if you see people walking in the middle of the sea. The movement of the sand dunes has created a shallow belt that divides the bay into two, starting from the coast. You can walk 600 meters into the sea from the dune known as Kızkumu. Legend has it that a girl, who wanted to meet with her lover on the other shore, walked through the sea with her skirt filled with sand. Orhaniye was a major settlement and a safe port – in ancient-times. However, it occasionally faced external threats.
There are many fortresses of different sizes dotted around the area. One small fortress on a large rock within the village was built by people living in BYBASSOS, an ancient city. Water was brought to the city from a waterfall in Turgut village by aqueducts and underground pipes using a physical law known as the cobined containers theory. The ruins of the ancient cities of KASTABOS and ERINE are also near Orhaniye. We recomment that you try the HOTEL DOĞAN and swim on its private beach and have an unforgettable diner while watching the sunset.
You can reach the HOTEL DOĞAN by following the road indicated by the sign on the righthand side of the road after passing by the MARTI MARINA on your way to Orhaniye. Vegetables grown in the hotel’s large garden are used the meals served here. Mr. Tayfun, the hotel’s pleasant young manager, goes to great lengths to please his guests. You can rent a boat for 200 Turkish liras a day to spend a delightful day in the surrounding bays, like other boat owners.
Do not worry about being late getting back, because the hotel is a fine place for staying over. If you reach Orhaniye by boat, the small jetties of the restaurants in the bay would be a good choice. BÜK YACHT RESTAURANT is the best of these, and it also offers free water and electricity. There is no charge for landing your boat. Delicious fish, bought from local fishermen are served there. It has a clean kitchen and good service standards. In addition, they organize trips to a nearby waterfall. |
